Aveng Grinaker-LTA services the power industry, the focus being on national power projects, including the refurbishment of existing plants. Aveng Grinaker-LTA has a long standing track record of delivery in the power sector, having been involved in the construction of power stations in South Africa as far back as the 1960s. 

Leveraging the value chain of several business units within the Group, namely Building, Civil Engineering, Mechanical and Electrical and Earthworks Engineering, Aveng Grinaker-LTA provides a full service offering in the power sector.

Services include the fabrication and installation of structural steel, ducting, platework and low-pressure piping. The Group also undertakes the installation of associated mechanical and electrical equipment, along with the construction of the related infrastructure.

Aveng Grinaker-LTA specialises in the design and construction of chimneys for power stations, and its expertise also extends to the construction of the civil engineering elements of power plants.

It has delivered, and continues to deliver, quality projects in this sector.

Recent and current projects include:

• Medupi Power station: Main civil engineering construction works for a new 4,800MW coal power station, manufacturing and installation of piping supports, 153,354 diameter inches piping and the installation of mechanical equipment items. Design and construction of two chimneys and nine silos.
• Braamhoek pumped storage scheme: Construction of two new access roads, as well as upgrading 57.5km of existing roads and the construction of various cast in-situ multi-cell culverts, piling and specialist grouting work.
• Kusile power station: Design and construction of two chimneys, supply and installation of 78km piping, 1,000 ton steelwork and 4,605 items of free issue mechanical equipment

Iconic projects completed include:

• Komati Power station: Design and construction of a 220m high reinforced concrete multi-flue chimney incorporating two flues, including the design and construction of two horizontal gas ducts from the old eastern chimney and western gas duct to the new chimney.
• Savannah thermal power station: Construction of civil engineering works for a new 89MW thermal / bagasse power station in Mauritius.
• Hwange power station" Construction of natural draft cooling tower 100m high, with associated pump bay, condensating water ducts, buildings and filter structures in Zimbabwe.
• Muela hydro power project: Construction of a new 72MW hydro power station.
• Matimba power station: Construction of turbine hall and auxiliary bay for units 5 and 6 for a new 665MW coal power station.
• Cahora Bassa hydroelectric scheme: Construction of an underground power station complex with a 220m long x 28m wide x 60m high machine hall.
• Koeberg nuclear power station: Construction of main civil engineering works, sea water pumphouses and additional buildings for this pressurised water reactor type power station with an electrical output of 1 844MW.
